Winter 2013
- I contend that cold weather builds character and camaraderie. No offense to the Texans and Floridians who may be reading this, but it is also my contention, based on hard-earned years of experience in the service industry, that the nicest people come from the coldest climates.

Autumn. Golden leaves, crisp cool air, warm sun and snow dusted peaks. This time of transistion in Summit County gets us excited and reved up for the snowy winter while we mourn the short lovely summer. Hiking and Biking is still here for all of us to enjoy so get out and explore! Things are quieting down but shops and restaurants are open. Incredible sales can be found and 2 for 1 Entree's are available at many of our county's restaurants. I really love the peace and quiet that comes at this time. The Hustle and Bustle is dying down and the local is re-emerging. Its a great time to be here.

And so the question goes, “what should I do this weekend?” Spring is literally here so I know that the blustery days of winter are waning and I want to get it all in. The answer seems easy with four separate ski and riding areas to choose from: Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, Keystone Resort or Arapahoe Basin. I could choose an afternoon of Nordic skiing too. Again, the question is where to go, Frisco Nordic Center, Gold Run Nordic Center, Keystone Nordic Center or Breckenridge Nordic Center? Or do I head out to the back country for a serene experience, away from most folks? I could rent AT Gear from Mountain Outfitters or snowshoes from Lone Star Sports. There is so much to do in our mountain towns. How about some snowmobiling? Colorado Summit Snowmobiling is a great choice for some guideless experiences.
Here is what I would do if I had one weekend to experience Summit County. I would get up and get over to Amazing Grace for their amazing Lattes and Breakfast. I always feel like I am up at a Hut with someone making me a gourmet meal. I would relax, check out the scene and read the paper to see what’s happening. Once fueled up, I’d gear up for some turns on the hill – you cannot go wrong at any of the ski areas! I would try to hit every area on the mountain and explore all the great terrain. Toward days end I would head down for a little Après. I think most of you would agree, a burger on the hill with a beer is a great way to kick back and reminisce about all the fun you just had. The day is still not over and most would agree that a session in a hot tub is in order - A nice relaxing soak and a shower. If you do not have one of those then I would recommend one of our community Rec Centers – Breckenridge Recreation Center or Silverthorne Recreation Center. Great Hot Tubs, Saunas and Steam room await you (drinking lots of water is a must!). After a long shower I would contemplate my evening plans – dinner! How to decide... Summit County has some of the best restaurateurs, rivaling any urban establishment. So let’s see I am in the mood to party a bit and I want to experience a somewhat local crowd. I think the Boatyard, on Main Street in Frisco is in order. Definitely a favorite among the local crowd their menu selection is extensive: steaks, pasta, burgers, pizza, eclectic apps. There’s always a feel good buzz there.
The night is not over though! Nightlife in Frisco is not too bad. Go checkout Shag for dancing and entertainment or Johnny G’s. Remember, the Summit Stage Runs most of the night BUT! Be sure to check the schedule before you start partying so you do not miss the last bus to where you need to go!
On my second day I would again head out for a great breakfast. The Arapahoe Café is another favorite with amazing Corned Beef Hash and Eggs Benedict. I would like a silent tour in the woods to experience the serenity the backcountry offers. Trails are abundant in Summit County. Trails maps are available at Mountain Outfitters in Breckenridge along with touring gear. I would also pack up a delicious lunch to bring along and lots of water. Be sure you are prepared with the things you need to be safe. Don’t be embarrassed to ask – Chris and his staff are very willing to help. After my touring excursion it’s on the do a little
(or a lot) shopping!  There are so many unique shops in Summit County. Breckenridge Main Street, Frisco Main Street, The Outlets at Silverthorne, Copper Mountain’s Burning Stones Plaza and Keystone’s River Run Village all have something to offer. There are great end of season sales going on out there. Check out our shopping page to get an idea of what is out there waiting for you! On my last night I would like to try out some of the areas fine dining. The Hearthstone Restaurant in Breckenridge or the Keystone Ranch are two award winning restaurants that are a true culinary experience. A complete day of bliss. A complete weekend of fun!
