Breckenridge's Historic Charm

Summit County has a lot to celebrate this season.

For starters, Breckenridge celebrates its 50th anniversary as a ski resort. What an amazing ride it has been ... from a rough-and-tough gold- and silver-rush town in the mid-1800s and a dredge mining town in the early 1900s to a fledging ski hill in the 1960s and an internationally renowned snow sports mecca today. Through it all, Breck has managed to maintain its mountain Victorian charm to the extent that its downtown is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. Be prepared for a lot of partying this season.

Summit County also is known for innovations, which might explain why Pete Swenson chose to live here. Swenson, who was an all-state alpine and Nordic racer in his native New Hampshire, went on to be a World Cup mountain biking competitor for seven years. He now is a major force promoting randonnée, a ski-up, ski-down mountaineering sport long popular in Europe but relatively new to the U.S. Learn what all the excitement is about in Devon O’Neil’s ”Ups & Downs.”

Of course, the entire Summit County area is primarily distinguished as a family–friendly resort destination. In Shauna Farnell’s “Family Style,” we present an information-packed, hands-on resource that guests and locals alike will find extremely useful in planning fun-filled days here. Organized by adrenaline level, this feature covers everything from workshops for making pottery to “hard boot” snowboarding.

And there’s much more. Jane Reuter’s “Outside In” examines current trends in mountain home remodeling, many of which have the interiors complementing the surrounding natural scenery. This issue also takes us on a tour of Frisco’s vibrant art scene, gets behind the counter at Summit County’s chef-owned restaurants, and includes numerous other useful tips for getting the most out of everything Summit County has to offer.

Enjoy yourselves, be it hitting the slopes, exploring the backcountry, or partaking of Summit’s many other diversions. Above all, have a safe winter season.
